Alder Hey Critical Care Education Team offers this innovative module which is recognised and accredited by the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS). It is intended to advance the knowledge and practice of professionals working at Paediatric Critical Care Level 3. The 22 week programme encompasses all aspects of Paediatric Critical Care and utilises several educational modalities including pre course reading, lectures, clinical competencies, work based placements, VIVAs and the presentation of an evidence based practice poster presentation.

A national rise in the number of patients presenting with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is anticipated across the NHS in the coming weeks and months.  The trust are committed to ensuring that staff have access to training and resources to assist you in caring for these children and their families.


THE RSV EDUCATION PACKAGE will be available for all staff to access from Thursday 8th July 2021.

 This consists of an online training as well as some face to face skills sessions.  They are open and available to all staff, across all disciplines with a plan to start from Thursday of this week for staff working in key frontline areas first.

Session 1 - online module on Moodle to be completed prior to session 2.
Session 2 -  Face to Face clinical skills workshop.

This course is intended to give you an insight into nursing a child that requires Level 1 and Level 2 critical care. The emphasis will be on a practical approach with the aim to ensure participants are able to clinically assess a critically ill child, recognize deterioration and act accordingly.

Classifications of Critical care

Level 1 (L1) critical care: Basic Critical Care, (HDU provided in DGH’s)

Level 2 (L2) critical care: Intermediate Critical Care, (HDU usually within tertiary Paediatric Centre)

Arterial line cannulation is indicated in patients in critical care who require continuous hemodynamic monitoring and frequent blood sampling. This self-directed learning workbook will provide a comprehensive guide to the nursing management of invasive monitoring and the principles behind it.


Welcome to the Foundation Course Programme. This programme is intended to provide the basic foundation knowledge and skills for nurses new to the critical care environment. On successful completion of the course students will be able to safely care for a stable ventilated level 1 & 2 patients, seeking support when required.

The course uses a structured approach with clear achievable learning outcomes aligned to the PCCS standards for nursing orientation. The course content will focus on holistic care incorporating airway, breathing circulation disability and exposure (ABCDE) approach.
